The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of TUC Ghana has expressed strong concerns over procurement irregularities at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), uncovered by the Ministerial Investigative Committee.
PUWU has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and efficiency in ECG’s operations and fully backs the committee’s efforts to address the violations.
In a statement, PUWU noted that since the appointment of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, it has closely monitored developments within ECG to ensure the company is repositioned to deliver better services.
The union supported the formation of the ministerial committee to explore effective transformation strategies for ECG without resorting to privatisation.
One of the major issues flagged by PUWU in its Position Paper was procurement inefficiencies and excessive government interference.
According to the union, it had previously questioned ECG’s management regarding delays in clearing procured goods, which led to unnecessary demurrage charges.
“We have repeatedly sought clarification from top management about the procurement process, especially why containers purchased were allowed to remain at the port, incurring demurrage,” PUWU stated.
To prevent further waste, PUWU has proposed that ECG enter into procurement agreements with suppliers who can deliver goods directly to designated locations. The union fully supports the Ministerial Committee’s efforts to track down missing containers and insists that those responsible be held accountable.
“We expect that those involved in these transactions will be held accountable and answer for their actions,” PUWU declared.
PUWU remains committed to advocating for efficient management practices that ensure value for money and the effective allocation of resources within ECG.
