The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has strongly condemned what it described as a “loathsome act of violence” against nurses and other health workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the association said the unprovoked attack occurred at the hospital’s Emergency Unit, where nurses were on duty. The GRNMA noted that the incident endangered health professionals who “were working tirelessly amidst inherent system challenges,” describing the assault as both shocking and unacceptable.
“Incidents of aggression towards medical staff undermine not only their safety but also the overall quality of care within our healthcare institutions,” the statement said, adding that such actions affront the values of respect and compassion that should guide public interactions with healthcare workers.
The association further criticised what it called the “palpable display of affection” from the Sector Minister towards the alleged ringleader, Ralph Saint Williams, warning that such gestures only embolden perpetrators of violence against health staff.
The GRNMA has urged hospital management to step up security at Ridge Hospital and ensure close collaboration with the police to investigate the attack. It called on the Ghana Police Service to arrest the ringleader and his accomplices within 48 hours, warning that failure to act would compel the association to take further measures to safeguard its members.
The leadership also appealed to the general public to show greater appreciation and respect for nurses and other health workers, stressing that healthcare delivery is only possible in a safe and secure environment.
“Health care services can only be provided in a safe environment. We must collectively, as a nation, condemn these acts and reaffirm our dedication to safeguarding the dignity and safety of our healthcare heroes,” the statement concluded.
The press release was signed by GRNMA President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and General Secretary Mr. David Tenkorang-Twum.
