President Akufo-Addo has hailed the newly sworn-in Chief Justice, Getrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, for her immense academic credentials, deep experience, and high level of professionalism.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Torkonoo, President Akufo-Addo said it was not a difficult thing for him to find a new person for the role of Chief Justice after the outgoing chief justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, retired on May 24.
“The choice of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as the 15th Chief Justice was not a particularly difficult one to make in view of her level of qualification, the number of years spent with distinction at the bench, and the superior court of judicature.”
“Indeed, the council of state conveyed to me by the hand of the highly respected chairperson, Nana Otuo Serebuour II, Juabenhene, the successful completion of this consultative process noted in his advisory letter of April 28, 2023, that members of the council who have known the nominee in both her private and public life vouch for her discipline, integrity, efficiency, professionalism, and above all, her God-fearing nature,” he added.
The president also commended Parliament for expeditiously conducting the vetting and subsequent approval of Justice Torkonoo following her nomination.
The President additionally promised to be a reliable partner in the office of the new Chief Justice.
“I want to assure Justice Torkonoo that just as I did with her predecessors, I will be a dependable and trustworthy partner of the judiciary so that the executive and judiciary can work together in the spirit of mutual respect to consolidate the tenets of good governance for the benefit of the Ghanaian people,” President Akufo Addo assured.
