The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in connection with the alleged assault of an 18-year-old female student captured in a viral video.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was apprehended by a Nyinahin District Police patrol team on Sunday, June 8, at about 7:00 p.m. following reports of the incident involving the student, identified as Patience Chibu.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, who serves as a caretaker of the school’s hostel, confronted the victim and some male students over alleged misconduct at the facility.

Police said a misunderstanding ensued during the confrontation, leading to the alleged assault on the student.

The incident reportedly sparked anger among some students, who allegedly pelted stones at the suspect and invited some youth from the town to the hostel in an attempt to attack him.

However, the Ashanti Regional Police Command said the situation was brought under control through the timely intervention of a police patrol team.

A Police Medical Report Form has been issued to the victim to facilitate medical examination and treatment, while the suspect remains in police custody assisting with investigations.

In a statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Antwi on behalf of the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the command urged the public to remain calm and resort to lawful and peaceful means in resolving grievances and disputes.

The incident has attracted widespread public attention following the circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing the assault.
