Three confirmed dead in Adentan after heavy Sunday rains

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ella Esiman Nongo, has confirmed that three people lost their lives following torrential rains that triggered widespread flooding across parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, May 19, Madam Nongo said the fatalities occurred in different parts of the municipality, including Lakeside, Nanakrom, and New Legon.

“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom and a gentleman around New Legon,” she stated.

The flooding was caused by nearly three hours of continuous rainfall starting around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, leaving many communities underwater. Affected areas included Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, and other parts of the capital.

Roads were rendered impassable, vehicles were stranded, and the Odaw drain, which channels stormwater through central Accra—overflowed due to the sheer volume of water.

Madam Nongo noted that emergency response teams had rescued most of the stranded residents in the Ashiyie area.

However, she emphasized the severity of the damage and ongoing risks, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she explained.

The MCE called for stricter enforcement of building codes and urgent action to tackle the root causes of perennial flooding in Adentan and the Greater Accra Region as a whole.
