The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has suspended its nationwide strike with effect from Friday, October 16, 2026, with members expected to return to work on Monday, October 19.
The decision was taken unanimously at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Accra following engagements with the Ministry of Education over the union’s outstanding grievances.
GAUA National President Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah said about 80 per cent of the concerns raised by the association had been addressed by the government, paving the way for the suspension of the industrial action.
The association’s strike, which began on August 10, 2026, was triggered by concerns over disparities in market premiums and other conditions of service affecting university administrators.
Despite the suspension, negotiations between the government and the union are expected to continue over unresolved matters, including salary structure placement and retirement-related rules.
The latest development is expected to facilitate the gradual restoration of administrative services across public universities, where the industrial action has disrupted operations.
The Technical University Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG), which also embarked on a month-long strike over related concerns, has similarly suspended its industrial action following government interventions.
The suspensions mark a step towards resolving the labour disputes affecting university administration, although outstanding issues remain subject to further discussions between the unions and the government.
GAUA’s decision to suspend the strike follows efforts by the Ministry of Education to address the concerns raised by university administrative staff and reach an agreement with the affected associations.
