The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) says it has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), ahead of a deadline agreed with teacher unions and government representatives.

In a press release issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the department said 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, together with their October salaries, while another 6,278 were paid in September.

The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears dating from January 1, 2026.

The department said the payments were completed ahead of the October 16 deadline agreed at a meeting between government representatives and teacher unions at the Ministry of Education on October 2.

Of the approximately 80,000 teachers reported to have been promoted, the GES processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633, according to the CAGD.

The department said it had verified and paid 56,003 of those cases, while 630 remained pending because of issues identified during verification.

It said the outstanding cases would be paid once the GES resolved the identified issues.

The CAGD further disclosed that 23,367 promoted teachers were yet to be processed, with the GES expected to submit the relevant documentation to facilitate their payments.

The department said it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met payroll requirements.

It added that it remained committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections were made or complete and accurate documents were received and verified.

The payments follow engagements between the government and teacher unions over outstanding promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears.
