GoRide, a new ride-hailing app developed locally with the needs of Ghanaian taxi drivers and commuters in mind, has officially launched in Accra, offering a competitive alternative to international ride-hailing platforms.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who officiated the launch at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) conference hall, praised GoRide as a major advancement in Ghana’s transport sector and a testament to the strength of public-private partnerships.
He emphasized that GoRide represents a unique opportunity for local drivers to thrive in the digital economy without sacrificing their earnings to high commission fees. “GoRide is more than an app; it’s a platform designed to restore dignity to our drivers, empowering them to keep more of their income and support their families,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The creation of GoRide was motivated by the challenges faced by local drivers, who have increasingly struggled under the high commissions charged by international ride-hailing platforms like Uber, Bolt, and Yango. Although these apps have brought convenience for passengers, they have strained drivers’ livelihoods by reducing their share of earnings.
In response to concerns raised by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the government supported the development of a locally focused app that would make the ride-hailing market fairer for Ghanaian drivers.
With a commission rate of only 10%—significantly lower than the average 20% charged by other platforms—GoRide aims to make ride-hailing more profitable for local drivers.
Initially launched in high-demand areas within Accra, GoRide aims to provide a modern yet simpler and more flexible experience for both passengers and drivers. As the app gains traction, plans are underway to expand its coverage across all regions of Ghana, allowing more communities to benefit from a locally supported ride-hailing platform.
Dr. Bawumia also highlighted GoRide’s contributions to Ghana’s economy, emphasising that profits generated by the app remain within the country. This approach fosters local wealth creation and strengthens the economy. He pointed to Ghana’s recent digital advancements—such as the Ghana Card, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, and Ghana.Gov—as foundational enablers in the nation’s digital transformation journey, helping initiatives like GoRide take shape.
A key feature of GoRide is its integration with Tap ‘n Go, a local digital payment platform, ensuring secure, cashless transactions for passengers and drivers alike. Dr. Bawumia noted that GoRide’s economic benefits would extend beyond the drivers themselves, creating jobs across vehicle maintenance, insurance, banking, and customer support sectors.
