The Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) has affirmed its position as a powerful force in the National Science and Math Quiz, recording its eighth win in the competition.
In a thrilling grandfinal encounter on Monday, PRESEC maintained its lead right from the first round to the last round, although the team got their fans on tenterhooks throughout the fourth round.
In the first to third rounds, the school dominated proceedings, stretching Achimota and Opoku Ware SHS by about 10 points.
However, in the fourth round, they dropped some significant points due to incorrect true or false answers, giving Achimota SHS, who trailed them, the opportunity to almost equal PRESEC’s point on the brink of the last round.
But PRESEC managed to maintain a vital three-point lead, giving them some impetus for the last round.
The Legon-based boys once again dominated the last round, correctly answering three out of the four riddles thanks to a rash of erroneous answers given by Achimota’s Kenneth Owoahene.
PRESEC got 40 points, Achimota secured 28 points, and OWASS managed just 23 points.
PRESEC also won the popular quiz competition in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2020, and 2022.
The school was also declared by the organisers the best school for the 30th anniversary of the NSMQ.
The grandfinal, hosted by famed quiz mistress Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, saw students, teachers, alumni, and patrons throng the National Theatre to cheer on their respective schools.
Also in attendance were the Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who represented President Nana Akufo-Addo; the Minister for Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum; corporate partners of the quiz; and a host of other dignitaries.
It was organised by PrimeTime Limited under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.
