The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, with the results of 8,295 candidates cancelled or withheld over suspected examination malpractices.
According to a statement issued by WAEC on Friday, September 4, 2026, the affected candidates were sanctioned following investigations into various irregularities recorded during the conduct of the examination.
WAEC said the subject results of 7,434 candidates had been cancelled for bringing foreign materials, including prepared notes, textbooks and printed materials, into examination halls.
The Council also cancelled the entire results of 861 candidates for possessing mobile phones in the examination halls.
In addition, the subject results of 957 candidates have been withheld, while the entire results of another 270 candidates have been withheld over various suspected offences.
WAEC explained that the decisions were approved by the 42nd Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee, held on Friday, August 7, 2026, following the completion of investigations into reported cases of examination irregularities.
However, the Council said some subject results of candidates from 169 schools remained withheld over alleged collusion.
“These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of investigations by October 30, 2026,” WAEC stated.
A total of 512,862 candidates from 1,022 schools registered for the 2026 WASSCE, comprising 225,270 males and 287,592 females.
The entry figure represents an 11.07 per cent increase over the 461,736 candidates who registered for the 2025 examination.
WAEC further disclosed that 5,049 candidates, representing 0.98 per cent of the total registered candidates, were absent from the examination.
