An improved year-on-year performance since 2020 has been recorded in the 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, according to results from the West Africa Examination Council.
In a statement announcing the release, WAEC stated that it “will make available login details to heads of school to enable them to access the results of their candidates, which have been hosted online.”
73.1% of the candidates had between A1 and C6 for English Language in 2023, in contrast to 60.39% in 2022, 54.08% in 2021, and 54.35% in 2020.
For Core Mathematics, 62.23% had between A1 and C6 in 2023, compared with 61.39% in 2022, 54.11% in 2021, and 65.71% in 2020.
In the case of Integrated Science, 66.82% returned between A1 and C6 in 2023, whereas 62.45% had the same results in 2022, 65.70% in 2021, and 52.53% in 2020.
In Social Studies, 76.76% were in the A1 to C6 brackets for 2023, 71.51% in 2022, 66.03% in 2021, and 64.31 in 2020.
WAEC revealed that it has withheld the results of 4,398 candidates for failing to return learning support materials provided by their schools.
Additionally, the Examinations Committee of WAEC approved the “cancellation of subject results of 3,647 candidates for bringing foreign material, the cancellation of the entire results of 839 candidates for possession of mobile phones in the examination halls, and the withholding of subject results of 4,280 candidates and the entire results of 1,005 for various suspected offences.”
The statement revealed further that some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for alleged collusion and the provision of AI-generated answers. WAEC stated that it is still investigating this incident.
The examination saw 448,674 candidates, including 212,453 males and 236,221 females from 975 schools, a 5.8% increase from the 2022 entry figure of 422,883, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, believes the 2023 set of WASSCE results is the best since the introduction of the Free Senior High School Policy.
“The 2023 WASSCE results look good. The best core subject results since fSHS started,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
