The four former members of the NPP who the party says have lost their membership by campaigning for Alan Kyerematen have accepted that they are no longer part of the NPP.
Reacting to a statement by the NPP indicating to them, they have “automatically forfeited” their membership per Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP constitution, Messrs. Buaben Asamoa, Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique stated further that they are committed to Ghana’s success, but through Mr. Kyerematen.
According to a statement from Buaben Asamoah on behalf of his colleagues, their open support for Kyerematen meant that they had exited the party, hence no need for a written notice from the party.
“First, our public conduct in unconditionally and with great conviction supporting the highflying independent candidature of Alan Kyerematen for president, is against the NPP constitution, which provides for automatic forfeiture of membership under article 3(9)(1). That is incontestable and therefore needs no formal written notice.”
Buaben Asamoah believed that Article 3(9)(1) would rather not be extended to other members of the party since some supporters may have different party preferences for the presidential and parliamentary ballots, popularly known as “skirt-and-blouse”.
“This is clearly out of step with the fast-developing political culture of “skirt & blouse”, where voters increasingly mix their choice of presidential and parliamentary candidates based on factors other than what the party ‘Leadership’ says”, Buaben Asamoa said.
“H.E. the President benefitted from ‘skirt and blouse’ when he won ten constituencies in the Central Region where NDC won the parliamentary seats. Are those who accepted the President but voted otherwise at parliamentary level to be sacked?” he added.
The former MP for Adentan argued that hundreds of thousands of members of the party are dissatisfied with the undemocratic processes of the party towards selecting a candidate [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] who would not appeal to the general electorate.
He also stated that the country is ready for a third force to end the NPP-NDC duopoly and set the country on a path of progress.
