Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Parliament, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson outlined progress under the government’s Big Push Infrastructure Programme, which aims to expand and rehabilitate transport infrastructure across all sixteen regions of Ghana.
According to the Minister, construction has commenced on 87 projects under the programme, comprising 74 trunk roads and bridges, 10 urban road systems, and three feeder roads.
Among the projects is the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway, a 176-kilometre, six-lane dual carriageway intended to improve travel between Ghana’s two largest commercial centres. The government projects that the completed expressway could reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi to approximately two hours.
Dr. Forson announced that the government has ring-fenced US$1.7 billion in a dedicated Accra-Kumasi Expressway Account at the Bank of Ghana to support the project. He said the funds will be accessed only after the main construction contract has been awarded.
Preparatory activities are also underway, with the Ghana Armed Forces having cleared 122 kilometres—about 70 percent—of the project’s Right-of-Way over a 12-week period. Full corridor clearance is expected to be completed by September.
“The funds have been ring-fenced and will be used only after the main construction contract is awarded,” the Finance Minister told Parliament.
