The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to step aside pending investigations into the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
The development comes after a widespread power outage resulted from the fire incident that occurred on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
In a brief statement issued on Sunday, April 26, the Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated: “The Minister for Energy and Green Transition has asked the CEO of GRIDCo to step aside pending investigations into the fire incident at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.”
In a related development, the statement also confirmed significant changes within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
“Also, there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti Region,” the Government Communications Minister added, without providing further details on the affected officials.
The statement further announced an upcoming high-level engagement to address the situation.
“At 2pm tomorrow, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon John Jinapor, will hold a major briefing on recent developments in electricity distribution,” it noted.
