Fresh details have emerged suggesting internal tensions and alleged sabotage among some legal representatives involved in the ongoing bail process for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken to social media to raise serious concerns about the conduct of one of Wontumi’s legal advisors, Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North. In a strongly worded Facebook post, Asante accused Appiah Kubi of playing “theatrics and internal politics” rather than genuinely facilitating the release of Chairman Wontumi from custody.
According to Asante, Appiah Kubi was fully aware of the bail surety arrangements facilitated by Dr. Bawumia, and the delay in release was largely due to the inability to complete verification processes. He questioned why Appiah Kubi would claim ignorance of these efforts and the subsequent variation in bail terms, which, Asante alleges, was coordinated by legal practitioner Gary Nimako Marfo upon the request of Chairman Wontumi’s wife.
“Did he also say that Lawyer Gary Nimako didn’t inform or engage him on the variation of the bail terms?” Asante queried, adding that the two lawyers had held a 30-minute discussion about the matter the previous day.
He also challenged Appiah Kubi’s assertion that the variation of bail terms affected the release process, describing it as misleading. “How does a variation of bail terms injunct a bail condition that has already been met?” he asked.
Further raising eyebrows, Asante revealed that the second surety for Wontumi’s bail had not yet been verified — a crucial point he says Appiah Kubi failed to disclose publicly.
The aide also accused Appiah Kubi of allowing personal grudges to interfere with the process, citing an instance where he reportedly objected to the involvement of other party-affiliated lawyers, including Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame. Asante claimed that Appiah Kubi had threatened to withdraw from the legal team if Dame was involved — an action he says discouraged further collaboration.
“Why is Andy not engaging party leaders on the matter?” Asante asked rhetorically.
“He should stop the personal grudges and think about the interest of Chairman Wontumi,” he added.
