The Ghana Highway Authority says motorists using the N1 Highway around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange should expect intermittent traffic disruptions in the coming months as it shifts bridge expansion works in the area to a weekend-only schedule.
The decision follows severe traffic congestion earlier this month when contractors attempted to close the Accra–Madina lane during weekday peak hours. The closure led to extensive gridlock that stretched for miles, eventually forcing authorities to suspend the operation and review the construction timeline.
Under the revised plan, major construction activities—particularly the installation of heavy T-beams—will now take place only on weekends and public holidays in an effort to reduce disruption to weekday commuters and business activity.
As part of the traffic management arrangement, vehicles travelling northbound from Accra toward Madina will be halted periodically for between two and four hours while the beams are lifted and installed. During these periods, the Madina–Accra carriageway will temporarily operate as a contraflow corridor, with two lanes dedicated to southbound traffic and the remaining two lanes accommodating northbound vehicles.
According to the authority, the temporary traffic stoppages are necessary to ensure the safety of motorists and construction workers during the lifting and placement of heavy bridge infrastructure.
Motorists are nevertheless being advised to avoid the construction zone where possible. Alternative routes include Liberation Road and the Airport Bypass, as well as inner-city routes through East Legon and North Airport to minimise delays.
