Lawyers for private investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas say their client is at liberty to appear in court in the Nyantakyi case, contrary to popular assertions of an order.
Reacting to media publications on the issue on Tuesday, the lawyers at Cromwell Gray LLP argued that Anas only chose to testify as a witness following the demise of Ahmed Suale, another member of his Tiger Eye team, and added that Anas will only testify if given the option to do so privately.
“Anas Aremeyaw Anas agreed to testify in place of Ahmed Suale on the condition that he do so in camera or in chambers.”
“The public should disregard false reporting that Anas has been ordered by the Supreme Court or is being compelled by the Supreme Court to appear in court without his trademark face beads,” the lawyers added.
The lawyers affirmed that Anas would continue to wear the iconic face beads “as a symbol of impartial anonymity in investigative journalism and to highlight the extreme risk in that line of duty.”
The former President of the Ghana Football Association, among other officials and members of the judiciary, is standing trial for corruption and fraud over “Number 12,” an investigative piece that was broadcast in 2018.
