Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, has died at the age of 60, his party and family sources said.
Mahama, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a period of illness, according to people familiar with the matter.
He was serving his fourth term in parliament, having first been elected in 2013 to represent the Ayawaso East constituency in the Greater Accra Region. Mahama hailed from Kue in the Nkwanta South District of the Oti Region.
Tributes from colleagues across the political divide described him as an experienced legislator and constituency advocate, though parliament had yet to issue a formal statement at the time of publication.
Funeral arrangements are expected to follow Islamic rites.
