Barnor Memorial Hospital is 65 years; advocates subsidised medical equipment costs

The Chief Executive Officer of Barnor Memorial Hospital, located in Lartebiokoshie in the Greater Accra Region, Bishop Dr. Patience Arama Spio Garbrah, has urged the government to subsidise the cost of medical equipment to help private hospitals acquire them more affordably.

She highlighted that the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar, combined with rising interest rates, has significantly increased the cost of medical equipment, making it difficult for hospitals to purchase essential tools.

Dr. Spio Garbrah suggested that the government could also offer these critical resources on credit, allowing hospitals to pay in installments.

Dr. Spio Garbrah made these remarks during a press briefing at the launch of Barnor Memorial Hospital’s 65th anniversary celebration, held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the hospital’s premises in Lartebiokoshie, Accra.

She emphasised that having access to advanced medical equipment is crucial for providing timely and effective emergency care. Reflecting on the hospital’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, she explained that the challenges faced during the crisis prompted them to invest in more sophisticated medical devices.

Dr. Spio Garbrah also shared a brief history of Barnor Memorial Hospital, which was founded by her late father, Dr. Matthew A. Barnor, and her mother, Mrs. Dorothy K. Barnor. After completing her education and gaining experience at various hospitals, she succeeded her father in 1994, when he retired at the age of 74. Since then, she has led the hospital as CEO, continuing her family’s legacy of healthcare excellence.
