A message from the Management Team of Bethlyn Arthur
How much suffering can one person endure before we begin to understand that survival itself comes at an enormous cost?
For three weeks now, Bethlyn Arthur has been back in hospital.
Barely recovered from a prolonged hospitalisation that included intensive care, she finds herself facing yet another difficult chapter in her journey with sickle cell disease.
Many celebrated when she left intensive care. We prayed, rejoiced and hoped the worst was behind her.
But surviving one crisis does not mean the suffering has ended.
Beyond the physical pain lies a burden we rarely discuss: the psychological and emotional exhaustion of repeated hospitalisation, interrupted dreams, uncertainty and the constant struggle to regain some sense of normalcy.
What happens to someone’s mental well-being when life becomes an unpredictable cycle of illness, treatment and recovery?
Must someone be fighting for their life before we recognise that they need our help?
Bethlyn is a certified midwife and passionate sickle cell advocate who has dedicated herself to encouraging others to live beyond their diagnosis.
Today, the woman who has inspired strength in others needs strength from those around her.
Because even the strongest people deserve moments when they do not have to be strong for everyone else.
As her Management Team, we are profoundly grateful for the prayers, encouragement and concern shown so far. But we are appealing for something beyond sympathy.
Practical assistance, appropriate professional support, emotional encouragement and blood donation through authorised centres can make meaningful differences in the lives of people affected by sickle cell disease.
And we ask each person to consider: If you were in her shoes, what act of compassion would mean the most to you?
Bethlyn’s experience reminds us that sickle cell care must extend beyond medical emergencies to include psychological well-being, recovery and meaningful aftercare.
Surviving should never have to mean suffering alone.
Let us stand with Bethlyn and with everyone silently enduring similar struggles.
Let our compassion become action.
