Colombia booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a deserved 1-0 victory over Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, bringing the Black Stars’ campaign to an end.
The South Americans controlled large spells of the contest and were rewarded with an early goal that ultimately proved decisive. Colombia will now face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
The decisive moment came in the 14th minute after an enforced change for Colombia.
Forward Jhon Córdoba was forced off with what appeared to be a groin injury just minutes into the match, prompting head coach Néstor Lorenzo to introduce Luis Suárez.
The substitution had an immediate impact as Daniel Muñoz found Suárez on the right, and the substitute delivered a low cross into the six-yard box for Jhon Arias to calmly flick past Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi.
Although Colombia created several opportunities to extend their advantage—including a goal that was ruled out and another effort brilliantly denied by Ati Zigi in stoppage time—they had to settle for a slender one-goal victory.
Ghana, making their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage since 2010, struggled to impose themselves throughout the match.
Carlos Queiroz’s side spent much of the encounter on the defensive and failed to consistently threaten a well-organised Colombian backline, producing few clear-cut scoring opportunities.
The Black Stars’ frustrations were compounded by a series of ill-disciplined moments that disrupted their rhythm and drew criticism from supporters, with many describing the team’s display as lacking composure and discipline.
Following the defeat, sections of Ghanaian football fans directed their frustration at the team’s tactical approach and selection decisions.
Among the issues raised were the decision to leave in-form goalkeeper Benjamin Asare and defender Jonas Adjetey out of the starting lineup, as well as the delayed introduction of forward Jordan Ayew despite his struggles during the game.
The defeat officially marks the end of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup journey.
