The Achimota Magistrate Court has fined the 16 NPP youth who besieged the studios of Abeka-based UTV during a live entertainment show.
The 16 who pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and rioting were accordingly convicted and fined 200 penalty units, equivalent to GHC 2,400 per person.
They were also ordered by the court to sign a bond of good behaviour.
On the night of Saturday, October 7, 2023, some violent youth numbering over 20 reportedly barged into the premises of the UTV during their United Showbiz programme.
Later that same night, the youth were arrested by the police.
The NPP thugs had accused the TV station of bias in favor of the NDC in the paneling of guests for the program, following a letter sent by some persons within the party to the management of the station.
During one of the episodes, a guest at the program, A-Plus, ripped apart a copy of the letter to the station, which angered the supporters, triggering the attack on the programme.
This action was widely condemned by authorities, including the Ghana Journalists Association, the National Media Commission, the National Commission on Civic Education, and the Ministry of Information.
The chairman of the party, Stephen Ayesu-Ntim, later went to the station to apologise on behalf of the leadership of the party, stating that the leadership did not sanction the actions of their youth.
