Days of speculation and rumors about the possible removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare by President John Mahama have been confirmed, as the president has officially relieved him of his duties.
In a statement from the Minister for Government Communications on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Dr. Dampare’s removal takes immediate effect, clearing the way for the likely swearing-in of newly appointed IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno on Friday, March 14.
“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to see the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read in part.
Dr. Dampare was recently queried by the president for an update on election-related deaths since 2016.
Some members of the opposition NPP have accused Dr. Dampare of bias in handling recent electoral operations, though former President Nana Akufo-Addo has not publicly supported this stance.
Meanwhile, some civil society activists, including the President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, had threatened legal action against the government should the now-former IGP be dismissed.
