It has become known that Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama resigned from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago, following the appointment of Second Deputy Governor Mrs Matilda Asante-Asiedu as his authorised representative.
Dr Asiama disclosed his resignation while responding to questions about his membership of the GoldBod Board and concerns over a potential conflict of interest arising from the relationship between the central bank and the state-owned gold purchasing institution.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” Dr Asiama said in video sighted by The Sikaman Times.
The disclosure follows concerns raised by former Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam at a recent press briefing over the BoG Governor’s membership of the GoldBod Board and the potential for a conflict of interest.
However, a letter sighted by The Sikaman Times shows that Dr Asiama had, on May 11, 2026, appointed Mrs Asante-Asiedu to act as his representative on the GoldBod Board.
In the letter addressed to the Chairman of the GoldBod Board, Dr Asiama stated: “I hereby appoint Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, as my authorised representative to attend and fully participate in all Goldbod Board Meetings on my behalf, effective Monday, May 11, 2026.”
The letter further stated that Mrs Asante-Asiedu was authorised to “represent my interests, contribute to deliberations, and exercise all rights and responsibilities vested in me as a member of the Board.”
The document, bearing a GoldBod received stamp dated May 11, 2026, was copied to the First and Second Deputy Governors of the Bank of Ghana.
Explaining the legal basis for the arrangement, Dr Asiama said the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), requires the central bank to have representation on the GoldBod Board but does not require the Governor personally to serve.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he contended.
