The Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) of Ghana has issued a strong warning to student nurses, midwives, and practitioners over what it describes as a “disturbing trend” of unprofessional behavior on social media.
In a public notice released on Monday, October 6, 2025, signed by its Registrar, the Council expressed concern about a growing number of videos and online publications involving trainee and practicing nurses that “depict conduct grossly unprofessional and in direct contravention of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct” governing the profession.
According to the Council, some individuals have been misusing the nursing and midwifery uniform to create social media content that either misinforms the public or undermines professional integrity.
“The misuse of the Nursing and Midwifery uniform in the creation of social media content that purports to educate the public or fellow practitioners without due authorization is unacceptable,” the statement said.
The N&MC further highlighted cases where some practitioners have used “abusive, derogatory and offensive language directed at leadership and other stakeholders,” and others have “disseminated misleading or unverified health information under the guise of professional advice.”
The Council reminded all students and practitioners that the nursing and midwifery professions are built on the pillars of integrity, respect, professionalism, and ethical responsibility.
“Any conduct that undermines these values tarnishes the image of the profession and erodes public trust in the healthcare system,” the statement emphasized.
The Registrar reaffirmed that the Council is the sole body mandated to accredit institutions and license individuals to practice as Nurse Assistants, Nurses, and Midwives in Ghana.
It therefore warned that no individual or group has the authority to provide public education or professional guidance in the name of the Council without prior approval or accreditation.
“All students and practitioners are hereby cautioned to desist from engaging in any form of unprofessional conduct, particularly on social media platforms.”
“The Council will not hesitate to invoke the necessary disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licenses, against any individual found culpable of breaching the professional Code of Conduct,” the Registrar warned.
The statement further appealed to all stakeholders in the healthcare sector to “uphold the dignity and sanctity of the nursing and midwifery professions” and to report any misconduct to the Council for appropriate action.
