The Forestry Commission has confirmed the attack and death of a middle-aged man alleged to have jumped the security fences of the Accra Zoo and entered the inner perimeters which house lions.
Contrary to popular assertions that the man was murdered and dumped in the enclosure, the Commission stated in a statement on Sunday that the “intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions within the inner fencing of the enclosure.”
The statement also noted that the pride, comprising a lion, a lioness, and two cubs, has been lured into a more secured place, assuring that no lion has escaped from the zoo.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has said it is conducting an investigation into the incident.
“The police are working with the management of the zoo and the Forestry Commission to get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident.”
“After the necessary forensic examination of the scene, the body was removed and has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement continued.
The Accra Zoo is situated within a hidden portion of the Achimota forest. It is under the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, where living wild animals are kept for conservation and breeding, education, research and exhibition.
