JCR System Abolished, Hall Week Suspended – KNUST Council Responds To Recent Clashes

The Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has responded to the recent clash involving two halls by banning all Junior Common Room (JCR) systems of hall management and suspending hall week celebrations, among others.

In a statement issued on Friday, it said the existing governance structure, comprising Hall Councils, Hall Masters and Senior Tutors, would continue to run the Halls, while Hall Fellows will be appointed and assigned to floors/blocks of the Halls to exercise direct supervision over matters affecting students.

The statement also announced the indefinite suspension of Hall Week Celebrations for all halls.

Furthermore, students who were found to be involved in violent activities are to be dismissed from the school.

The council also noted in the statement that going forward, students found participating in “morale” and/or processions will be summarily dismissed and their names will be published on the school’s website and on national platforms.

The Council’s directive follows recommendations of a fact-finding committee appointed by the Executive Committee of the school after the clashes.

It stated, however, that it still supports the work of the Police and that any person found culpable of engaging in the clashes should be dealt with in accordance with the rules of the university and the laws of the Republic of Ghana.

In a related event, some student leaders and members of the student body have expressed their displeasure with the callousness of the JCR systems.
