The government has unveiled new measures to intensify “Operation Halt,” the ongoing military-led campaign against illegal mining in water bodies.
A statement released by the Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 revealed that the operation, spearheaded by the Ghana Armed Forces, will now partner with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana.
In a renewed warning, the government emphasised that river bodies and forest reserves remain off-limits for mining, designating them as red zones. Miners operating in these areas have been ordered to vacate immediately.
The statement further reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining and urged all stakeholders to unite in supporting the initiative.

GOVERNMENT TAKES FURTHER ACTION TO TACKLE ILLEGAL MINING
1. Government in its continued efforts to clamp down on the long-standing menace of Illegal Small-Scale Mining, has concluded operational measures to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt” which is led by the Ghana Armed forces, to rid our river bodies of all forms of mining activities.
2. This phase of the operation will be done in conjunction with the Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana.
3. Government reasserts that river bodies and forest reserves remain red zones.
4. Government reiterates its commitment to the fight against illegal small-scale mining and calls on all stakeholders to join the fight.
