President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the National Service Authority (NSA) on Friday, October 18, marking a significant milestone 50 years after its founding.
The transformation from the National Service Scheme (NSS) to the NSA is designed to elevate the scope and impact of youth service nationwide.
Following the passage of the NSA Bill in July this year, the authority now has the mandate to mobilise and deploy qualified individuals for national service in critical sectors supporting national development.
During the launch in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of aligning the NSA’s vision with other institutions to maximise its effectiveness. He also announced that a strategic decision would soon determine the appropriate ministry to oversee the authority, in line with the new NSA Act.
The President highlighted the NSA’s role in promoting national cohesion and contributing to infrastructure development across sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and local governance.
“Each year, around 150,000 graduates are deployed, with approximately 50,000 serving in the education sector alone. This not only furthers our national development goals but also saves the country an estimated GH¢3 billion annually in wage costs,” he noted.
Akufo-Addo described the NSA’s establishment as a bold step forward, enhancing the authority’s capacity to support nation-building. Beyond deploying personnel, the NSA will now focus on equipping young professionals with employable skills, ensuring their success after completing their service.
Looking ahead, the President expressed confidence that the next administration, under Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would build on this foundation, ensuring that the NSA continues to drive youth development and national progress. “Our nation’s future depends on the skills, creativity, and innovative potential of our young people,” he stated.
NSA Board Chairman, Nee Odoi Tetteyfio, reflected on the challenges encountered in transforming the NSS into an authority, citing operational and resource limitations. However, he praised the determination of the leadership, which facilitated the smooth transition through extensive consultations, stakeholder engagement, and internal reforms.
In attendance were NSA Executive Director Osei Assibey-Antwi and Minister for Education Yaw Osei Adutwum, who showcased the government’s progress in transforming the education sector, including improvements in infrastructure and resources.
