The government has announced the suspension of the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act 2024 (Act 1118), citing the need for further stakeholder engagement.
In a statement released on Friday, February 7, the Ministry of Roads and Highways emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing key concerns raised by various stakeholders.
The suspension aims to create space for more inclusive consultations to ensure that the Act aligns with the interests of all parties involved.
The National Roads Authority Act, passed by Parliament in July 2024, was designed to streamline the management of Ghana’s road infrastructure.
The Act proposed the merger of three major road institutions—the Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and the Department of Feeder Roads—into a single unified structure to enhance coordination and efficiency in the sector.
“The decision to suspend the implementation of the NRA Act reflects the government’s dedication to inclusive governance and its responsiveness to stakeholder concerns,” the statement read.
Despite the suspension, the Ministry reassured the public of its ongoing commitment to improving operations and fostering better coordination within the road sector.
