The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. says yesterday’s power outage in multiple parts of the country, particularly the capital, Accra, was due to a shortage of gas at the Tema supply point.
In a statement on Thursday, October 26, 2023, the company said: “The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo), the operator of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), informs the general public that due to a limited gas supply in Tema, there will be a supply gap of 550 MW at peak time.”
“This will affect power supply to consumers in some parts of the country”, the statement added.
GRIDCo, however, did not communicate any timelines on the restotoration of gas leading to a stable power supply.
It also did not provide a schedule of which parts of the country would experience power outages and at what time.
Meanwhile, some analysts have attributed the shortage of gas to the debts owed to the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAPCo), resulting in cuts in supply.
