The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have informed the general public of the restored gas supply from its West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) and restored power plant operation to affected customers during the temporal power outage in some areas in the country.

In a press release on December 13, 2024, the companies explained that “Gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) to thermal power plants in Tema has resumed. All power plants that shut down have been restored to operation for customers”.

GRIDCo and ECG further assured customers of their continuous effort to ensure a continuous, reliable power supply while extending appreciation to its stakeholders and customers for their patience and understanding during the power crisis.

Background to the Statement

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on December 12, 2024, announced to the general public that due to a temporal shutdown of its West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited Tema Regulatory & Metering Station, some thermal power plants supply in Tema had to be shut down.

This joint statement explained that the shutdown has caused a shortfall in power supply, requiring some limited load management in some parts of the country. It added that the temporary shutdown of its Tema Regulatory & Metering Station occurred due to some operational upsets when some larger-than-expected liquids and debris were received at its Lagos Beach Compressor Station.

The West African Gas Pipeline Company is an entity that transports natural gas from Nigeria’s Delta to neighbouring countries (Benin, Togo, and Ghana) through the West African Gas Pipeline. It also provides gas supply to power plants, reducing frequent power outages in countries like Ghana.
