The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has criticised the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health for unilaterally rescheduling a scheduled meeting, warning that the decision could undermine ongoing efforts to resolve issues that led to a recent nationwide strike.
The meeting, initially set for June 26, 2025, has been postponed to July 10, 2025, following a letter from Parliamentary Services citing the unavailability of key stakeholders currently outside the country. GRNMA received the notice on June 25.
In a press statement signed by GRNMA President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and General Secretary Mr. David Tenkorang-Twum, the Association described the rescheduling as being in bad faith and cautioned that it could further delay the implementation of key agreements.
The Association noted that the strike, which began on June 2 and escalated to a full withdrawal of services on June 9, was suspended on June 13 in good faith following interventions by the Committee and appeals from the public.
The Association stressed that it expects the implementation of the four agreed items no later than July 2025, describing this as non-negotiable. It further indicated that the remaining items should be addressed by January 2026.
These timelines, according to GRNMA, must be clearly captured and signed off at the rescheduled meeting to avoid ambiguity.
The leadership urged all nurses and midwives to remain steadfast as the Association continues its engagement with authorities.
