Authorities at the University of Ghana have announced the reintroduction of safety protocols and the suspension of all student social activities following a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus and in surrounding areas.

In a statement issued by the University Health Services Directorate on June 23, the university community was alerted to “a few suspected and confirmed cases” of COVID-19, prompting the activation of emergency health measures.

“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread,” the statement urged.

The Health Directorate emphasized the importance of face masks in enclosed or crowded areas, regular handwashing or use of hand sanitizers, physical distancing of at least one metre, and avoiding large gatherings. Additionally, community members are advised to stay at home and seek medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms.

As part of the response, screening and triage protocols have been reinstated at all university health facilities. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide regular updates,” the Health Services Directorate assured.

In a related development, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs announced the immediate suspension of all student-led social events. The directive, dated June 25 and signed by Dean Prof. Rosina I. Kyerematen, affects activities organized by groups such as GRASAG, the SRC, JCRs, and departmental or school associations.

“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the university community,” the statement read.

The suspension will remain in effect until further notice.

Members of the university community seeking information or needing to report symptoms have been advised to contact the University Hospital through the provided emergency numbers or email channels.

The university has called for full cooperation from students, staff, and visitors in efforts to limit further transmission and ensure the continued safety of the campus.
