The Office of the Vice President has responded to frustrations expressed by handlers of the “Heal Komfo Anokye” project in clearing some consignments at the Tema Port.
A statement by the project lead, Sammy Adu Boakye, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, thanked Dr. Bawumia for his swift response following compliances by the former earlier in the day.
“Owing to my recent unilateral Facebook comments as well as a media interview regarding the delays in getting import duty waivers for the Heal Komfo Anokye Project… the office of the Vice President has thankfully responded with alacrity with the assurance of taking up the matter and getting it resolved favourably,” Mr. Boakye’s statement read in part.
The statement, however, did not reveal the kind of assistance provided by the vice president.
Adu Boakye also lauded the former Majority Leader and Suame MP, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, for his support in attempting to obtain tax waivers for items to be sent in for the project.
Expressing his frustration on Tuesday over their inability to get tax waivers for 10 containers of tiles imported for the project, Adu Boakye criticised the state for charging such import duties, although successive governments had failed to carry out any major renovation works at KATH.
The total import bill, which has a payment due date of July 2, 2024, is GHC 1,714,265.13.
