Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has emphasised the vital role nurses and midwives play in national development, recognising their unwavering dedication as the backbone of Ghana’s healthcare system.
According to him, the role of nurses is fundamental to effective health service delivery, hence the need to support them.
“Your dedication is the backbone of our health system. Today, we acknowledge and celebrate your invaluable contributions,” he stated.
Akandoh highlighted the significant health challenges facing Africa, particularly the rise of non-communicable diseases.
“In Ghana, we are currently battling meningitis in the northern belt and cholera in parts of the central region,” he noted.
He urged nurses and midwives to stay committed to achieving better health outcomes by 2030, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reaffirming his support for the profession, he assured that health workers recruited last year would not face termination.
The minister reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with nurses and midwives to strengthen healthcare systems and commended the association for organising the event.
Speaking at the inaugural 2025 African Nurses and Midwives Confederation Conference (ANMC) on February 21—attended by dignitaries from across Africa and China—Akandoh underscored the importance of strategic bilateral agreements.
He emphasized the importance of creating international opportunities for health professionals while safeguarding the stability and integrity of Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
The conference, themed “African Nurses and Midwives: Fostering Health for All in Africa,” marked a historic milestone as the first of its kind.
