President John Dramani Mahama has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a global symbol of compassion and justice whose legacy will endure for generations.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Mahama expressed sorrow over the pope’s passing and extended condolences on behalf of his family and the people of Ghana.
“The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing. On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana during this time of profound grief,” he wrote.
The President recalled his personal encounter with the pontiff during an official visit to the Vatican.
“I fondly remember visiting the Vatican with my wife, Lordina, where we had the distinct honour of meeting Pope Francis,” he said.
Further, he praised the pope’s enduring moral leadership and advocacy for the vulnerable, saying: “His legacy of compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice will continue to inspire generations. His leadership and advocacy for the poor and marginalised resonate deeply.”
Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, was the first Latin American pope and served as the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
