Hotels Sale: Organised Labour remains on strike despite SSNIT’s termination announcement

Organised Labour has yet to resume work despite indicating they would only report to work after a public announcement by SSNIT of the termination of the sale of a 60% stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited.

In their statement on Friday, July 12, 2024, Organised Labour noted that “from Monday, July 15, 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels.”

However, later on the same day, SSNIT, in a press release, noted that it had terminated the transaction, assuring organised labour of working in their best interest.

No sooner had SSNIT announced the deal cancellation than further agitations began for the dissolution of the board and senior management of the Trust, citing improper administration of workers’s funds.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) said in a press statement on Saturday, July 13, 2024, that while it supports the action of Organised Labour, it believes the board and management have not acted dutifully in discharge of their responsibilities.

“UTAG firmly believes that the Board and top Management of SSNIT have demonstrated bad judgement and poor corporate governance skills that significantly eroded public trust in their ability to effectively and efficiently continue carrying out their responsibilities.”

“Their initial decision to proceed with the transaction despite widespread public outcry indicates a disregard for the sentiments and welfare of the broader populace. This action has undermined confidence in the Board and Management’s capacity to manage our pension funds and assets prudently and transparently.”

“In the light of these events, UTAG is calling for, in addition to the termination of the sale as demanded by Organised Labour, an immediate dissolution of the board and the resignation of the top management of SNIT,” UTAG noted in their statement.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that the leadership of Organised Labour will hold an emergency meeting today, Monday, July 15, to decide on their next steps.
