Ignore Police statement; our protest will come on – Jubilee House demo organisers

The organisers of the “Occupy Julorbi House” demonstration say it will go ahead with their planned 3-day picketing despite a court injunction purportedly sought after by the police.

The police announced in a statement on September 20th that it has, through a court order, stopped the demonstration and served the organisers with the same.

While urging the public not to respond to calls by the organisers to assemble for the demonstration, the police charged the organisers themselves to respect due process.

However, in a rebuttal, the organisers said the police have not served them with any application prohibiting their demonstration.

According to them, throughout their interactions with the police, nothing was done to suggest that the police would not provide them protection in line with the Public Order Act.

They accused the police of attempting to frustrate the lawful exercise of their constitutional rights.

“We are appalled by the desperate and likely partisan by the Police to disrupt peaceful and democratic mobilisation for our upcoming Occupy Julorbi House picket”, the organisers, Democracy Hub said in their statement.

They further asked the public to disregard the police “misinformation” and proceed to 37 Trotro Station on Thursday to begin the protest.

“Our picket will proceed as planned”.

“We invite the general public to disregard a statement which is riddled with misinformation”

“We invite the general public to assemble at the 37 Trotro Station at 6.30am tomorrow for onward march to the Julorbi House”

They argued that their stance is against the background of similar stances taken by the government and Electoral Commission that the “mere filing of an application does not prevent the exercise of constitutional rights”.

Meanwhile, the police, in a fresh statement, insist they duly served the organisers with the application through their lawyers, Atuguba & Associates.
