The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran, citing growing security concerns following the intensification of hostilities between Iran and Israel.
In a social media post issued on Monday, 16th June, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that the evacuation covers all Ghanaian nationals residing in Iran, including embassy staff, students, professionals, and other members of the Ghanaian community.
The exercise is being carried out via land borders as the situation in the region becomes increasingly volatile.
“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” the Minister disclosed.
He added that the decision was taken “in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives.”
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, raising concerns over the safety of foreign nationals living in both countries.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that while evacuation efforts are currently focused on Iran, the government is also monitoring developments in Israel and may issue further directives. “We are equally keenly following developments in Israel and will advise shortly,” he said.
In the meantime, Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv has been instructed to reduce its operations to the barest minimum. All Ghanaians currently residing in Israel have been urged to maintain close contact with the consular department for updates and emergency assistance.
“Government assures that no effort would be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” the Minister emphasized.
He further called on both Iran and Israel to prioritise diplomacy and de-escalation stating that “the Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities.”
