NPP elections: National Council rejects petition to centralise super conference

The family of Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally requested that he be excused from all party-related duties and engagements with immediate effect, citing medical reasons.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, the Ntim family expressed concerns over Mr. Ntim’s current state of health and his ability to continue performing his duties as party chairman.

The letter, signed by multiple members of the extended family, including sitting Member of Parliament Hon. Adelaide Ntim, asked that he be granted a temporary break from both “active office duty” and “outright party politics.”

According to the family, Mr. Ntim’s medical condition requires “time off from active professional activities” to allow for adequate attention and monitoring. “Although not official, it is well known that Mr. Ntim is not well at the moment,” the family stated, referencing what they described as recent developments in his well-being.

The family’s request comes ahead of a party meeting scheduled for June 17, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra—a meeting Mr. Ntim is reportedly expected to chair.

The family said it had become aware of a circular from the party’s General Secretary regarding the meeting and objected strongly to Mr. Ntim’s involvement, describing it as “deeply saddening” in light of his current health.

“Even merely participating in such an event will not augur well for Steve due to his current cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation for such a high-profile event,” the letter read, adding that compelling him to chair the session would amount to an infringement on his personal rights.

It calls on the party’s leadership to prioritize Mr. Ntim’s health and allow him space to recover.

“We trust the NPP party hierarchy and stakeholders to accordingly do the right thing,” the letter concluded.
