The Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II-led project to renovate sections of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, named “Heal Okomfo Anokye,” has been impeded by approximately GHC 1.7 million bill owed the GRA for import duties.
Some 10 containers of tiles are presently stocked up at the Tema Port of the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority due to port clearing charges totaling GHC 1,714,265.13, according to a tax bill sighted by The Sikaman Times.
The bill, which was issued on March 25, 2024, has a payment due date of July 2, 2024.
According to sources, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital applied to the Ministry of Finance in February this year for tax waivers, but the Ministry has yet to respond to the request.
Currently, an estimated demurrhage cost of over USD 1,000 per day is being incurred by the project.
The $10 million “Heal Okomfo Anokye” project serves to address the urgent need for infrastructural improvement in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, which receives referrals from 12 out of the 16 regions of Ghana.
It forms part of the Asantehene 25th Anniversary Legacy Projects, which aim to improve Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s infrastructure, promoting healing, comfort, and safety for Ashanti Region residents.
