A male student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) attempted to end his life on Tuesday, according to a campus news portal, “Voice of KNUST”.

In a viral video, the student attempted to hop onto the ground from the last floor of a balcony at Brunie Complex, a 5-story apartment, purportedly in a bid to end his life.

However, his attempt failed, as other students on the balcony could be seen in the video dissuading the suicide attempter from carrying on the act.

It is unclear the reasons for his act, but according to an unconfirmed note being disseminated on social media, the “victim” allegedly cited sleep paralysis and visions of demons.

Meanwhile, scores of students at KNUST have demanded the restoration of extracurricular activities in the school as a means of overcoming depressive tendencies and reducing suicidal thoughts.

In August 2022, the management of the university banned all hall activities due to frequent inter-hall conflicts.

This restrained students from such extracurricular activities as hall week celebrations, musical concerts, and “morale”.

According to the students, this is not the first time an incident of suicide or a failed suicide attempt has occurred.

There has not been any official communication from the university following Tuesday’s incident.
