The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, popularly known as “Taacum”, to life imprisonment for the murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, widely known as Maadwoa.
A seven-member jury delivered a 5–2 majority verdict, finding him guilty of murder after a trial that lasted nearly three years.
The sentencing was handed down on Friday, 24 October 2025, by Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu. Prosecutors told the court that on 20 April 2023, the police officer shot Ms Dapaah multiple times in the abdomen and chest at close range near her home in Adum, Kumasi.
Investigations revealed that the killing followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt that Inspector Twumasi had demanded from Ms Dapaah. When she failed to repay the money, he reportedly confronted her and opened fire using his service rifle.
After the incident, Twumasi fled the scene and was arrested three days later at Sekyere, near Effiduase in the Ashanti Region. Although he initially confessed to the shooting, he later claimed it was unintentional and pleaded not guilty.
Relatives of the deceased who attended the court hearing expressed relief at the outcome. “This is justice finally served,” said Ms Dapaah’s mother, Adwoa Nyarko, who thanked the media for keeping public attention on the case.
The killing drew national outrage and reignited debate over the misuse of firearms by law enforcement officers in Ghana. Police authorities have since pledged to tighten internal monitoring and ensure stricter accountability among officers.
The case remains one of the country’s most widely followed murder trials in recent years.
