President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr Abdul-Baasit Aziz-Bamba as Acting Director-General of the Value for Money Office.

The appointment, announced by the Presidency on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, was made in accordance with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 14(1) of the Value for Money Office Act, 2026 (Act 1172).

According to the Presidency, Dr Aziz-Bamba will serve in an acting capacity pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the Governing Board of the Value for Money Office, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

Dr Aziz-Bamba is a Harvard-trained lawyer and, prior to his appointment, served as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law.

The Value for Money Office was established to scrutinise public expenditure and assess whether government spending delivers value and serves the public interest.

The Presidency said the Office is mandated to ensure that “every cedi of public expenditure serves the public good.”

It added that Dr Aziz-Bamba’s appointment forms part of efforts to operationalise the Office, strengthen scrutiny of public spending, curb waste and ensure that government expenditure delivers tangible benefits to Ghanaians.

The appointment comes following the enactment of the Value for Money Office Act, 2026 (Act 1172), which provides the legal framework for the operations of the institution.

The Office is expected to play a role in assessing the value derived from public expenditure as the government seeks to strengthen efficiency and accountability in the use of state resources.
