MultiChoice ‘promotion’ or Govt’s negotiation? Disparities emerge over new DStv offer

A new DStv offer announced this week has sparked confusion, as Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George’s description of the deal as a “permanent value increase” appears to contrast with MultiChoice Ghana’s own branding of the initiative as a temporary promotion.

On Monday, the minister told journalists that after engagement with MultiChoice Africa, Ghanaians would enjoy “an unprecedented value increase” of between 33% and 50% across all subscription tiers. He presented detailed package comparisons suggesting subscribers would enjoy significant cost savings through automatic upgrades.

For example, he noted that customers on the Padi package (GHS 59) would be upgraded to Access (GHS 99), gaining 35 additional channels at a 40% saving, while Family subscribers (GHS 190) would move up to Compact (GHS 380), receiving 22 more channels at a 50% saving. Higher-tier subscribers, he added, would also see equivalent benefits, with Premium subscribers (GHS 865) gaining entry into a special competition for all-expenses-paid trips to English Premier League games.

However, in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on its website, MultiChoice presented the offer differently.

The company described the “We’ve Got You” campaign as a limited-time promotion designed to reward loyal customers during the festive season. Running from October 1 to December 31, 2025, the campaign allows new, active, and previously disconnected subscribers to view one package higher than what they pay for, at no extra cost.

“This promotion is our gesture to give our customers even more value,” the company said, emphasising loyalty and customer appreciation rather than a structural reduction in costs.

The difference in framing has raised questions about whether the upgrades are a regulatory achievement secured by government or simply a seasonal marketing drive by MultiChoice.
