Following former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s pledge in 2021 that the National Cathedral would be ready for commissioning by March 6, 2024, some NDC officials, in an act of jest, were around the site today to commission the building.
Led by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, no sooner had the opposition team attempted to enter the cathedral site than armed police and military men stopped them on grounds of lack of permission.
Earlier today, the official social media accounts of the National Cathedral described a fake poster by Hon. Ablakwa advertising a media engagement at the site to, among other things, purportedly commission the cathedral, which is currently at foundation level.
However, after minutes of verbal banter between the NDC officials, which included Sam George, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, and Sammy Gyamfi, and the security personnel, the parties agreed to allow the NDC team to address the media at the entrance of the site.
With Okudzeto Ablakwa cutting the sod, Sam George declared, “We commission the most expensive hole in the name of President Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and Ken Ofori-Atta,” amidst clapping from the scores of people who were present.
Hon. Ablakwa further demanded accountability for the various sums doled out for the project.
The US$400 million project, according to President Akufo-Addo, is in honour of a pledge he made to God before assuming the presidency.
Critics have described the budget for the project as highly inflated, while others have condemned it as needless considering the country’s present economic plight.
