The National Democratic Congress has chastised the Electoral Commission for not showing transparency and accountability over the missing biometric equipment.

In a press conference on Monday, April 15, 2024, addressed by General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, the party asserted that the theft of vital biometric equipment under the Electoral Commission’s security is a significant threat to our electoral integrity, indicating a potential compromise of our safeguards.

The NDC demanded immediate rectification from the EC to restore security for upcoming elections, conduct a thorough investigation, and ensure complete accountability, adding that the country’s future depends on it.

“We demand immediate and decisive action from the Electoral Commission. The time for excuses is over; the time for transparency, accountability, and rectification is now. Ghana is watching, and the world is watching. The integrity of our elections and the future of our democracy hang in the balance.”

“Let us be clear: we will accept nothing less than a full restoration of total security for all EC logistical equipment for the upcoming elections, a thorough investigation, and complete accountability. Anything short of this is an affront to our nation’s future,” the party said.

The party also accused the ruling NPP of scheming to win the December elections at all costs, including appointing people aligned with them to the EC and the judiciary.

“The government has taken deliberate “strategic” steps towards their ignominious goal of winning elections at all costs by ensuring institutional decay in our dear country. They have appointed rabidly partisan and biassed members of the NPP to independent institutions such as the judiciary and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.”

Following an earlier denial by the EC of the Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) at an IPAC meeting on April 9, the NDC cast doubt on the integrity of the EC when the EC later admitted the BVDs are missing.

The party stated that it will continue to demand accountability from the EC until the “electoral system is not only secure but beyond reproach.”

“We are alert, we are prepared, and we are uncompromising. The EC must do the right thing, and they must do it now. Let this be a warning: the eyes of the nation and the world are watching.”
