The newly elected Chairman for Nigerians in Diaspora Africa (NIDO), Prof. Jude Odiakaosa Osakwe, has encouraged all Nigerians across the continent to be members of the organisation so that they can be looked out for and given the needed assistance in their time of need.
Prof. Osakwe observed that no man is an island, hence the need to join the group and enjoy its benefits.
He said this on Friday, May 24, 2024, during a colourful event to elect him and other executives at the UDS Guest House in Accra.
Speaking to the press after his acceptance speech, Prof. Osakwe was hopeful that very soon Nigerian traders in Ghana, who face many challenges when trying to do business in Ghana, will soon have most of those challenges solved.
This, according to him, is because leaders of the group have met with the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and apprised him about some of the plights Nigerian traders in Ghana go through.
“Two days ago, we visited the Vice President of Ghana, where we also told him about our concerns, particularly what traders are facing and how they will also assist traders, and they also agreed that they would see what they could do about it.”
“So we are going to form that kind of relationship with governments so that they will also help in looking after foreigners within different countries,” he said.
Addressing challenges faced by the organisation in the past, Prof. Osakwe explained that NIDO Africa was established by an act of parliament by the Nigerian government to take care of Nigerians in the Diaspora, particularly professionals and business people who are outside the shores of the country, so that they can come together and work together and help the government develop the country.
He said the organisation was also established to help unify Nigerians living in Diaspora Africa, adding that it will consider how Nigerians can live in other countries and how best they can help them financially as well as politically.
He added that members of the organisation will be taught about investment and what they can take back home when they want to go back home, so that they do not go back to Nigeria with empty hands.
Professor Osakwe disclosed that the group also has the intention of spreading the word with other Africans who live and work in other parts of Africa. According to him, in most African countries, foreigners are not treated well, hence their intention to have most of these people under one umbrella to help them when the need arises.
