The New Patriotic Party has announced its decision to withdraw from all Media General platforms, citing persistent unprofessionalism and biased coverage of the party’s activities.
This move, according to the party, comes after months of attempts to address concerns with Media General’s management, production teams, and hosts regarding what the NPP describes as unfair treatment and attacks on its leaders.
In a statement released on January 27, 2025, the NPP expressed frustration over the continued “unprintable attacks” on prominent party figures, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The party pointed to specific incidents, including a recent program hosted by Keminni Amanor, during which a regular guest made derogatory remarks about the former president without any objection from the host. According to the NPP, the host simply “laughed them off,” allowing the unwarranted attacks to continue.
“Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed unprofessionalism and unfairness persist,” the statement read. “We invite the general public to objectively assess the panelling, hosting, and general coverage of the NPP on Media General platforms. They will see that these unfair practices exist and are targeted at the NPP.”
The party specifically called out the political shows Key Points and Newday, alleging that these programs consistently feature biased panelling, with guests predominantly aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and only one representative from the NPP. The NPP claims that its calls for balanced representation on these shows have been ignored by Media General.
“Depending on the issue, they assemble three or four people (depending on the issue) whose political affiliation and orientation are known to be aligned with the National Democratic Congress against a single representative from the NPP,” the statement says. “Our calls to balance the invitations to the program have fallen on pretentious deaf ears.”
Despite these ongoing issues, the NPP stated that it had continued to engage with Media General in good faith, trusting that changes would be made. However, with no tangible improvements, the party has now decided to withdraw entirely.
The NPP emphasized that their withdrawal from Media General’s platforms would not deter their efforts to fulfil their duties as the main opposition party, remaining steadfast in their pursuit of holding the government accountable.
“We wish to assure the NPP family and the Ghanaian people that our commitment to hold this already failing John Mahama administration accountable will not be affected by this decision. We will fulfil our responsibilities as the largest opposition party in Ghana, God being our help,” the statement said.
